Electric Youth + Pelifics

Brilliantine Records is proud to present the latest offering from Oslo producer Pelifics (alias of Eirik Seu Stokkmo) as an EP in two potent acts.

Expanding on his already notorious style, Lifetime Volume 1 provides us with his markedly fresh combination of disco and house, infused with a strong homage to 1980’s pop and funk. The result is a series of compositions that leave the listener happily oscillating between sounds of youthful nostalgia and the future sound of disco.

The first track of the EP is the ethereal “Wish It Could Last”, a collaboration with 2011 Drive Soundtrack darlings Electric Youth. With a marked Pet Shop Boys vibe, tracks are injected with strange new life in a juxtaposition between indie dance beats and Bronwyn’s whimsical vocals.

Can’t Promise Anything with Human Life veers Volume 1 into different (yet strangely familiar) territory, and makes you hope with all your might that someone will choreograph a dance routine to accompany it. Again we’re presented with patchwork collection of sounds from a bygone and much romanticized era, but with fierce funk riffs that bite back.

Magic takes us on another disco-tainted journey that merges flawlessly with the best elements of the second age of golden pop. In Pelifics own words, “The track started off as a homage to one of my all time favourite tracks “Nothing Looks the Same in the Light” from Wham!’s album Fantastic.”

Drive (2011) Soundtrack

I just finished watching the movie Drive (2011), directed by Nicholas Refn. Holy shit is it ever fantastic! Honest to god the best movie I have seen in years. The film pins its headlights on the dark implications of unchecked obsession and good intentions gone haywire. That dangerous duality – humanity on the razor’s edge of animal brutality – is played to unnerving perfection by Ryan Gosling. With a low budget and the odd Hollywood marquee, the film was never expected to make the impact it did.

And well; the soundtrack is even more impressive. With a lineup like Kavinsky, College, Electric Youth and more, it slides right into our alley. Go out and watch it.

Grum – Turn It Up [Heartbeats Bonus Track]

Late last week and all weekend I became re-hooked on Grum’s Heartbeats album. The album is ridiculously awesome but one of my all-time favourite tracks from within is Turn It Up, a collaborative piece between Grum and Electric Youth.

The track is full of 1980s nostalgia to which many compare Bronwyn’s vocals to an early Madonna. It’s that excellent. When I first started bloggin’ back in the day one of my colleagues actually went to highschool in Hamilton, ON with the Electric Youth duo. At that point they hadn’t jumped into the music scene quite yet but it’s still pretty cool to see how we’re all connected on one level or another.

Electric Youth + Fare Soldi [2 For 1 Thursday]

In case you missed it, Electric Youth released their newest just over a week ago. The duo from Ontario continuously hit all the right chords with me. This time they hooked me with Bronwyn’s sultry vocals and Austin’s ‘in your face’ electric-pop backdrop. Right Back To You is a jam everyone should have in their library. Stay tuned for news on maybe an upcoming album? I’m speculating but they have enough tracks to put something together on an album. For those interested, follow any real news here.

I’m not quite sure when this next track dropped, but Fare Soldi’s new remix to Duck Sauce’s Barbara Streisand is dope. I have been listening to it non-stop this past week. Soldi packs in a pretty aggressive re-work that takes to the original pretty well. For those who don’t know who these guys are, you should click here for more previews. They’re sick.

Fare Soldi is partying in Italy this coming month. Click here for those dates.

Electric Youth [Remixed]

Between posting the new stuff, I like to throwback to some great tracks in addition to tossing out the occasional post on some of my favourite artists. For me, Canada’s own Electric Youth hit both these feats. Having found each other in a Hamilton highschool, Austin and Bronwyn have together formed one powerful and talented partnership. And even though they produce their own stellar music (which you can all listen to here). they also provide a damn good canvas for other artists to use and abuse. Here are some of my own select favourites:

Electric Youth – Intrinsic (BombJack’s Silky Rework)

Get Excited, The Future is Sweet

valerie

Wow, the people behind Valerie continue to impress me. They continuously unite great artists in phenomenal shows time and time again. Valerie Party, Paris, April 10th is no exception. It marks Electric Youth’s first European tour. Included alongside is College, Anoraak, and Maethelvin. April 10th in Paris is shaping up to be one hell of a night. To celebrate my love for Valerie and the upcoming show we kept it real simple.

College are sweet. I’m digging on a remix by 1928 that hit the Valerie Collective a couple days ago. This track is captivating. The vocals compliment the track so well and wow, don’t even get me started on the rhythm. Simply awesome. It’s pretty much continuously playing right now. Valerie’s promotional description is pretty spot on so I thought I would include it for the curious mind.

We have a highly-rated sound this week, the Australian 1928, who did me the wonderful favour of remixing ‘Can you kiss me first’. This remix stays faithful to the original in mood and character, but the addition of a feminine vocal allows us glance upon it in a completely different way.Valerie

Also on the card April 10th is Maethelvin, which coincidentally is incredible. I stumbled across a demo track by him about a week ago that really impressed me. Caught up with work I neglected to toss up a post. No longer procrastinating I now have an excuse to share this track. Maethelvin = great.

Maethelvin – Delight (Demo)

To continue in the spirit of the April 10th show in Paris, (with Electric Youth, College, Anoraak, and Maethelvin…yadda yadda, going to be a great show) included below is the video link to College’s track “She Never Came Back,” which feature Hamilton’s Electric Youth. The screenplay for the video is by Frantz Lasorne and Nicolas Guyon. It’s a great track and the video is fresh out the oven. Get it while it’s hot.

Justin Faust’s newest release Revenge EP came out earlier this week. As a special treat he has released three mixes of tracks found within the album. Get them while they’re hot. As for Faust, he’s no stranger to the industry. He has been producing music since 1992 and in doing so has developed his own unique sound that speaks for itself. Faust has also made noise with some of his own remixes including work from Hamilton’s own Electric Youth. With the release of Revenge, Faust has created some of the best chill synth I have heard in a long time.
