Big Gigantic [Rise and Shine]

Big Gigantic, whose blend of mind-bending beats, thunderous bass, and frenetic melodies has developed a rabid following since forming in 2008, will take their sound to yet another dimension this January when they release ‘Nocturnal.’ The album, by Boulder, CO-based saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken, solidifies Big Gigantic as a key player in the worlds of electronic, dance, and hip-hop.

With a provocative sound that’s as thoughtful as it is danceable, Big Gigantic’s new songs like “Nocturnal” and “Hopscotch” weave whirling melodies into addictive beats and samples that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Kanye West or LCD Soundsystem single. No genre is off-limits for Big Gigantic, whose breakthrough sound channels everything from funk and dub-step to house and hip-hop.

After graduating with a master’s degree in jazz at the Manhattan School of Music, Lalli relocated to Boulder and began performing with Salken, experimenting with the idea of interpreting traditional DJ-based music with live instruments. The duo built up early hype in 2008 with local shows and one-offs around the country before releasing their debut album ‘Fire It Up’ in 2009 and embarking on a full US tour.

Already a smash on the festival circuit, Big Gigantic’s transcendent live shows are a showcase of brilliant improvisation and a tightly-knit bond between Salken and Lalli, who breathlessly alternates between keys, sax and laptop, building a futuristic wall of sound that keeps the crowd on its feet. The marathon shows feature a variety of songs new, old and unreleased, as well as outside-of-the-box remixes including Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” Aloe Blacc’s ‘I need a Dollar,’ and Notorious B.I.G.’s “Notorious Thugs.”

Tuskegee Cadet & Blazin – “Keep It 100 Mixtape”

The Los Angeles based producer Blazin put hip-hop drums against prismatic synths on his last beat tape, “Night Career”, and it’s two parts “Raw Like a Circular Saw” and “Relics of Psychedelics”.  Blazin has hooked up with his cohort (whose name I find to be genius) TuskegeeCadet on his latest mixtape, “Keep It 100”, a title that connotes the rhythmic artisanship you can expect from the pairing. All beats were handcrafted by Blazin and TuskegeeCadet, with Blazin handling mixing duties. TuskegeeCadet also helped out with some mind expanding visuals in the form of a promo vid…

Within a forecourt that Deadmau5, Tiësto and Radiohead have already soley made their second home-away-from-home, Victoria Park in the United Kingdom is getting itself geared up for another one of its groundbreaking outdoor shows and fantastic musical spectaculars. Beyond the aftermath of Deadmau5’s main stage arrival on Saturday 11th June 2011, it should in no doubt add itself to Victoria Park’s own existing folklore and momentous, live grandeur.

With Skrillex now added to this one day event @ Victora Park, the main attractions of Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Nero, Retro/Grade, KimFai and many more artists on this line up are making this to be a one time L.E.D. & Mixmag endorsed showcase to remember forever.

So if you’re in the UK come the 11th June 2011 and you have/haven’t purchased your tickets yet, then there’ s only one event in town that you need to head on over to and that’s Deadmau5 and co @ UK’s Victoria Park.

MINNESOTA x2!

Double the sentiment, double your pleasure, double your fun!

With an aim to make bass heavy dubstep/glitch-hop music that’ll get you dancing (and is not the same old, 3 note transformer-step..), USCS’s History major Christian Bauhofer aka Minnesota takes a bite out of the glorious peaches of Santa Cruz, California and crafts a dual wonderment of Stella Artois refined beverages, with a side order of other miniatures and lagers just incase you don’t like those big n’ chunky Artois’s that are on offer here …

With that said, Minnesota’s re-take of SVD’s XX Booty Mix of ‘Intro,’ originally done by The XX, perfectly enhances Sander Van Doorn’s own inspiration and gives The XX even more creative turns on the dancefloor for future months of longevity. ‘Juicy’ retains that same element also and smashes home The Notorious B.I.G.’s unique skills for all underground and less discerning dancefloors worldwide.

We tip our hats to you Sir!

BIGGIE SMALLS – Juicy (Minnesota Remix)

EVERETT JAMES – Peace [735 Music]

Everett James from 735 Music sends us through a very abstract sounding analogue track which immediately wouldn’t trouble the high end speakers of an old skool Massive Attack party. Featuring the slight delicate whispers of an MC getting warmed up for his next freestyle, ‘Peace’ dips and bobs its head in a dream like state and makes an even more powerful delivery with its constant poignant drums and its fantasy-inspired phasers.

Peace” as it is here, is another example of how splendid a track can sound like without too many vocal parts added to it.

EVERETT JAMES – Peace

PHARRELL & DAFT PUNK – The Game Has Changed

The Game certainly has, if Pharrell is lending his lyrics over Daft Punk’s TRON Legacy track of the same name folks. Artistically credible, with an already epic backing, the addition of a plausible hip hop artist over the instrumental of a thought provoking soundtrack piece does no harm to the Original indeed. If in doubt then ask the other half of N*E*R*D, Nero, Paul Oakenfold and the Swedish House Mafia. Hmmmmm, I see a pattern developing here…

BEASTIE BOYS – Make Some Noise [Capitol Records]

Since the 2007 release of “The Mix-Up” LP, King Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D of the Beastie Boys have been stirring away in preparation for some patent Beastie-Boys-action. ‘Make Some Noise’ returns as a terrific single to the fold, with a brand new album to accompany it come the merry third day in May. “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two” LP should be another banger!

BEASTIE BOYS – Make Some Noise

NICKY RAGE vs. SKRILLEX vs. LA ROUX

Besides the bad idea of layering Busta Rhymes vocals over Tiësto vs. Diplo – ‘C’mon,’ Nicky Rage sends us his own genius mixtape of tight n’ spacey lyrical flow over Skrillex’s unbelievable remix of La Roux’s, ‘In For The Kill.’

Totally refreshing to hear this in this context, so if you haven’t heard the Original umpteenth times already, then get ready to inject a new audio outtake on your very La Roux ears!

Nice one Nicky!

LA ROUX – In For The Kill (Skrillex Remix) (Nicky Rage Re-Vocal-Edit)

JANET JACKSON – Together Again [Virgin Records America, Inc]

Closing the mighty electronic dance music porthole gently (like putting a Johnsons baby powder scented-newborn down to rest), we return to slower BPM (Beats Per Minute) quarters through the form of another Jackson family patriot.. Miss Janet “Supreme” Jackson!!

‘Together Again’ was originally penned as a tribute ballad song to recently deceased friends who had died from AIDS. Through radio play and it’s evolution into a dance track, it became a much loved single and a very prominent selling single in the year of 1997. Featuring remixes from the holy hierarchy of house legends in Tony Humphries and Tony Moran forms (plus DJ Premier with his freshly dry cleaned, hip hop jersey on), the J.J. Original (as well as all the single release remixes) perform reminiscently well and carry off a magnanimous amount of vigorous body and note worthy soul to them also.

Crisp in its swagger and enormously loving it is shell, ‘Together Again’ returns on famous ground to remind fans that J.J. hasn’t forgotten you, nor has she lost sight of you. Spiritually uplifting, it’s an unconditional love-fest song – like Janet is to the millions!

Future Sound – The Thrills EP

Future Sound recently released his new EP The Thrills and decided to share some songs with Aerial Noise listeners. The EP is pretty magical. It caresses you into unforeseen musical territory full of sultry, smooth electro. My favourite track, and the one i shared with you all today, is The Lover’s Quadrant. Within, the vocals have a real progressive/hip hop nature to it and accent the track extremely well. It is what I would describe as an electric lullaby.

If you dig this beat I know you will dig the entire EP. Check it out via the bandcamp link provided below. With the release, Future Sound issued a statement to his listeners. I liked it so i included it below in italics. Catch a glimpse into his soul and go listen to the EP now.

Check out his website for more details on future productions. Listen to a copy of the EP for free over at bandcamp.

*     *     *

This is my love at the current moment. My creation. My gift to you all.

A lot of hard work has went into this EP and I hope you guys enjoy it.

This is my life right now. Your basically talking a walk in my shoes for 25 minutes or so…

Don’t treat this like your traditional Hip Hop EP, this is mood music.

Take this and feel it.

I feel like I created a soundtrack to the lives of my peers and I.

The lyrics can be switched, but the feeling is still there.

Special thanks to everyone that was involved in this project, from the models to the engineers, from the actors to the producers, all the way down to you…

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Thrills

KRIS KROSS – Jump (Super Cat Mix) [Ruffhouse Records]

“OLD SKOOOOOOL!!!!!”

This track needs absolutely no introduction does it????

It’s totally timeless… and undisputedly, one of the many king-sized rap tracks of the nineties – bar none!

Showcasing a not so much over-played mix of ‘Jump,’ is the Super Cat mix which you see before your eyes. It features a pleasant, but yet credible, ragga lyrical burst throughtout the mid refrain and includes plenty of wicked turntable scratches too.

Anything new & additional is always welcomed to assist that never-tireless-energy that always makes us wanna go “JumpJump!

TURN IT UP!

KRIS KROSS – Jump (Super Cat Mix)

VANILLA ICE – Ice Ice Baby (New Romantic Mix) [SBK Records]

Back in 2009/2010 there was an absolutely dodgy ‘housewives choice version’ of this track that re-surfaced slightly via the help of some immature, UK, pre schooler twins. They actually managed to rope in the actual Vanilla Ice (from out of his hiding place) and back into THEIR own public domain which was “not cool” to see in the slightest.

To top that all off, Halifax – the UK’s most, well-known building society – (with no sense and decorum), decided to use the ‘Ice Ice Baby’ idea in one of their adverts just to TRY and make themselves look ‘cool and with-it’ with the general public in an (hand over ones embarrassed face) attempt to advertise their most recent mortgage policy.

Cringing nonetheless, I hope that any inadvertent, continued listening to V.I.’s Original hasn’t put you off the tune of ‘Ice Ice Baby’ altogether, as I’m about to reveal a virtually unheard and unknown remix that sprung up on a 2008 CD from the very man himself.

See what you think about this New Romantic remix and don’t be afraid to drop back any comments Aerials!

The Hood Internet [CFCF + Ice Cube]

Binary did it again! The blog turned record label enlightened me with the Chicago-base duo The Hood Internet’s It Was A Rainy Day mashup. It’s a track meant for “the party after the afterparty.” First of all, CFCF is absolutely amazing. I love their sound and if you have been following us since the very beginning or at the very least, glanced at our archives, you’ll understand why. Their sensual and melodramatic beats are heavenly, beautiful, and simply amazing.

When you toss in The Hood Internet’s mashup with Ice Cube, CFCF’s instrumental takes on a whole new dynamic. This track is great for soothing yourself to sleep or taking your boy’s out for a spiritual drive by.

Yasmin + Royal-T [On My Own]

Yasmin is preparing for the release of her debut single On My Own due out on January 24.201 off Ministry of Sound records.

Yasmin struck fame when one of her DJ sets caught the eye of mainstream hip hop boy-toy Pharrell Williams. Not long after she found herself touring with the likes of N.E.R.D., The Cool Kids, Will.i.am, Taio Cruz and Eve. At the same time she permanently cemented herself as a DJ though her gigs at Bad Intentions- a well-known and established club in London.

Besides being offered tons of record deals before signing with Ministry and gaining tons of support and notoriety from friends in the industry including BBC Radio 1, Yasmin has already been called “the next best thing” out of the UK by those close to her. As a newly developed singer-songwriter her work is undoubtedly becoming more recognized as one of the bigger names to watch out for this year.

Her debut single ‘On My Own’, comes across with stunning heartfelt vocals layered over a fiercely fresh hip-hop beat, completely reflecting her totally unique style. - Ministry of Sound
