THE SOUL SEARCHERS – Blow Your Whistle

ESG x 4

Remaining far ahead of its time during its conception – let alone their quality in sound; Emerald, Sapphire and Gold (ESG) were the original originators of art-funk inception embracing a superior sister-ship by all of the multifaceted polyrhythms and bass / lead guitar compositions that they played extensively.

Formed by the sisters Marie, Deborah, Valerie and Renee Scroggins and signed to the 99 Records stable – in the beginning, they went on to produce a hand count of outstanding studio albums and enjoyable renowned singles. But like with many esteemed 80s bands it seems, they met an unfortunate hurdle in 1983 due to a sampling conflict that they had with Sugarhill Records over Grandmaster Flash’s sampling of Liquid Liquid’s ‘Optimo’ acting as the final blow for the day-to-day running of 99 Records. In 1984 ESG decided to disband and then reformed in the early nineties with a collection of previously released material.

Already sampled to high heaven by the greats listed known as Tricky, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, TLC, Wu-Tung Clan, Unrest and Liars.. ESG are tractably still performing with the outlook of even more new shows and new music for the future. Split twice, and reformed twice.. this is the energy of ESG.

Alex Fedorov – “High Balance”

Self-taught, guitar prodigy Alex Fedorov last checked in with his epic “Last Forever”. Still unsigned, Fedorov continues his work out of Bedrock Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, and he’s passed along three of his favorite tracks, as well as a video clip for “High Balance”, one of his signature, hypnotic instrumentals. Fedorov’s textured sound is truly unique, and while the process of constructing his multilayered gems can be consuming, the results are always rewarding. The new album arrives sometime this year, and is due to be titled “Ahead of Time”, and all his material can be further explored at http://www.reverbnation.com/alexfedorov

The Magic – ‘Mr Hollywood’

‘Mr Hollywood’ is the debut single by The Magic. The band are made up of brothers Geordie and Evan Gordon, from small town Guelph, on the outskirts of Toronto. The track takes in syncopated disco rhythms, languid 80s funk, and FM pop - a record as equally indebted to the effervescent pop of Phoenix, as it is the white funk of Talking Heads.

Geordie sings, plays guitar and keys, with Evan on bass, backing vocals and production. Together the duo create a sensational sound that’s backed by tons of potential.

Introducing.. FLUTTERT

Introducing Fluttert from out of the safe havens of Utrecht, The Netherlands, disembarks a tale of two stories with one leading the way in hard-ironed disco house and the other trailing the funkier end of melancholy debauchery.

Watch out for a certain Salsoul Nugget sampled bomb being dropped towards the first half of Fluttert’s amazing Live Funk Beach Mixtape Aerials & Aerial-ettes, plus another one listed soon after being full of indie punk surprises. Wonder-Fluttert-ful!

“Lickin’ My Love” – RETROTATION MASHUP (Mord Fustang ft. Justin Timberlake)

Retrotation, AKA Matt Olick, is versatile, and he’s not afraid to show it. It’s been a bit since we last heard from our favorite ex-video game developer turned musician with a “passion for inspiring beautiful things that  lay dormant inside every human being”. The Mord Fustang mashup is unexpected, and genius, and a promising sign of things to come as Retrotation continues to fool around, mixing together electro house along with the usual club hitters like Afrojack and LMFAO…Check out the new track and a little preview of things to come from our buddy Retrotation

Ugly Kids Club – “Sheepskin”

Nashville’s Ugly Kids Club is a collaboration between Steve Wilson (producer, songwriter, guitarist) and Aliegh Shields (vocalist, lyricist, guitarist). The duo came together in early 2011, and mutually draw inspiration from The Police, Talking Heads, Sleigh Bells, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine and The Kills, among others.

They triumphantly return with an artsy video from their self-titled EP. Each track comes with it’s own visual accompaniment, and “Sheepskin” can now be enjoyed (with images) at the Ugly Kids Club YouTube channel. UKC also recently released their self-titled album on iTunes with special limited edition cassettes for their vintage-loving fans. The video for “Sheepskin” is conceptually unique, and features clips highlighting vintage American pastimes, with precious  few glimpses of Aleigh and Steve.

The Ugly Kids are on a mission to get closer to their fans, pleasing their senses with vivid visuals paired with rich music. The twosome has been featured on indie music sites nationwide and rocked the audiences of popular music venues in Nashville (as they will be doing in the near future) and beyond. UKC are proving to be anything but ugly with a star quality most only wish they possessed…Check out the flyer for the upcoming UKC show in Nashville and keep watch for a forthcoming album…

Weapons of MASS PRODUCTION

Unmistakably apparent with as much identical ‘greatest of all time’ + ‘best ever’ tendencies in regards to Triple H’s and The Undertaker’s epic battle @ Wrestlemania 28 this past Sunday, The Undertaker solidifying his legacy into the upper crests of echelons via his emphatic 20-0 Wrestlemania win – is as pretty much the same as these two unbelievable fascinations from Mass Production in their golden years.

Coming back down from those MP skies, we land on their world with a major groove in our armoury steps.

Right the Stars – “Stay (Don’t Go Away)”

Right the Stars is a product of overseer Rich Jacques, whose resume includes collaborations  with some of LA’s best to create his new sound. The band, a collaborative project with Rich Jacques as the centerpiece, brings together some of the city’s most talented musicians to create an unabashedly feel-good indie-pop record.  The collaborative project was born with the track “We Got It All”, a song co-written with Rob Giles and Guy Erez. The track led Jacques to dive into a fuller and more band-centric pop sound which was starkly different from the troubadour mold he had been performing in for most of his career.  ”I wanted to stretch beyond the limitations of just a guy with an acoustic guitar” says Jacques. The self-titled debut for Right The Stars was released in 2010, however the project realizes its full potential with Hello Yes OK.  Drawing its title from three words which are universally understood throughout the world, Hello Yes OK is a delightful record with hooks piled upon hooks.  Creating a musical language which shares the same universality.  The guys will be performing a residency at Molly Malone’s in LA, and you can check out “Stay (Don’t Go Away)” below…

SALÓN ACAPULCO – Astronauta [Mix Le Fun]

Partnered mutually as a recent anthology of love, ‘Astronauta’ on Mix Le Fun records collectively brings back the early noughties house spirit, and that intensive, creative, exciting force which facilitated truckloads of uniquely minded house tracks; right to the forefront; with their ongoing loops & alternative use of live sampled instruments.

Positively enriched and sundrenched like a grand sized container of marinated olives with fennel, lemon and chilli pepper waiting to tickle your tastebuds … Salón Acapulco continue their one of a kind, best-of-the-best series through a dangerous KC & The Sunshine Band edit, their own track called ‘Charleston..’ plus another two storming re-edits of Giorgio Moroder and Charo & The Salsoul Orchestra.

You better go and get your Factor 50 ready, as this one may heat up your souls!
