Usher – Climax (Gentlemen Thieves Remix)

The New Division

Here’s a great track sent to us by Lindsay Colip. For those that do not know, The New Division is spearheaded by John Kunkel (vox/producer) and amplified by Micheal ‘Janzie’ Janz (sequencing/synths), Mark Michalski (synths) and Brock Woolsey (guitar). Influenced by Joy Division, New Order and Depeche Mode, they have taken the tastiest slices of these bands and infused some new life into them. Not stuck under the weight and spell of the greats that came before them, but perfectly inspired, these guys have done what most bands can’t do. They’ve remained faithful to their influence without being a copycat. Their sound feels comfortably connected to the past but with a momentum that fastens them to the future. The core stays true to electronic dance music while supporting thick branches of 80’s synth, italo disco and brooding chill wave. Kunkel adds tugging lyrics to the tracks, bringing satisfying emotion to the party.

Kunkel and his mates are constantly writing music. On any given day, they’ll have multiple
songs going at once, expanding and editing whenever it feels right. In early 2011, they felt they had 6 songs right and put out the highly acclaimed EP, The Rookie. It wasn’t long after that they felt they had enough material for a full length, and in late 2011, they released Shadows. This album is generating a huge buzz. As more people put their ears to it, Shadows continues to climb up charts all across the US as well as internationally. Several music publications named the LP a top album of 2011 and as the new year unfolds, the masses are catching on.

The New Division are embracing today’s musical landscape by being multifaceted.
Understanding the relevance of collaboration, they continue to drop remixes of their favorite artist’s tracks and in return, encourage others to remix their own music. They have also started a label, Division 87 Records, which scouts both in the States as well as overseas for new talent. Several members also have side projects going (Gala, John Glenn). If you’re lucky enough to be in the Los Angeles area, you can hear the guys live before they inevitably head across the pond to appease their international fans.

No plans of slowing down, they are striking while the iron is hot. A new EP is due out in late Spring, more live shows are being announced and a festival in their future looks probable.
If they continue at this pace, which seems likely based on the amount of started songs on
Kunkel’s computer, it will be a very ear pleasing year. They’ve also decided to take a more
collaborative songwriting approach on this new EP, which will only enhance and deepen their already solid sound. In sum, The New Division will make you want to get into your car on a dark, rainy night and take a drive though a glittering downtown. Into your soul they will instill a deep longing for the introspective 80’s, when emotions were pinned to your jacket and one glance from the girl gutted you. And above all, they will encourage you to honor your inner demons and in the same breath, remind you to roll down your window so you can blow them out with one long exhale.

Western Walk

Young Latitudes (a label based in Brighton/Madrid) just released their first free release by newcomer Western Walk.

Western Walk is the project of Tobi Soetan from Toronto, Ontario whose sound is described as “concrete, psychedelic noise-pop with ’80s synth-pop melodies and slowed down early ’90s hip-hop rhythms.”

Western Walk’s debut EP “Future, Mirror” is made of five tracks that evoke a certain 90s dreamscape nostalgia, blended with smooth, opiate electro-pop.

ANDREW BAYER – Time To Forget [Anjunabeats]

Label home of the electronic dance music legends (and young at heart) Above & Beyond, Anjunabeats brings forth a sign-up-track which you would have received if you had showed initial interest involving Andrew Bayer’s “Its Artificial” LP from 2011. Still sounding like it was born from out of a subculture which was specifically built in homing these tracks onto a particular TV advert, Bayer’s melodic and mesmerizing tune just seems to wonder on & on into picturesque magnetic-fields and soothing dimensional pastures. What a tune!

GOLDROOM – Angeles (Follow Me Remix)

Made with even more imagination than I could ever dream up.. Follow Me’s cosmic rebirth emanates radiantly from my uncle’s home town of New York City. Condensed with more evaporating airiness than Goldroom’s liquid milk itself, Follow Me polish off an entire crate of analog equipment – with more use than you can shake a stick at – and gift wrap their sound nicely inside a realm which is unquestionably “37,000 years into ancient future past” and 1,000 years into future present. I think Follow Me have just put themselves into the territory of viable and noteworthy creators.

IT IS RAIN IN MY FACE – As Is [Denmark Records]

Executed intelligently with many cleverly prepared angelic tones, Brooklyn’s Matthew Jones (aka It Is Rain In My Face) evolves the complexities of man more times than 2001: A Space Odyssey might do. Through mysterious whirls and ambient kitten-like brushes, ‘As Is’ sets its self up as a finished five track EP release made through Bandcamp R Us, and marking the stool which polishes any dirty shoes and dirty minds clean.

INDIDGINUS feat. PABLO SANDOZ – Gene Swarm [Microdot]

Previously heard through his enjoyable and most eclectic 2011 Bandcamp released album entitled Sofa Surfer, we step back in time to Indidginus’s earlier album of 2008 (“Feast or Famine”) for a retrospective look at a track called ‘Gene Swarm.’

Harbouring parallel similarities to The Shamen’s ‘Re:iteration’ track – by using a speech sample as the main centre point in where the main message really lies, ‘Gene Swarm’ remains ideal, and very un-dated for lots of downtempo magic and wholesome Balearic deeds. Within Indidginus’s 130 to 139bpm “Feast or Famine” assortment, lies a noteworthy six and a half minute example of beautiful textured bliss.

Rebel Rebel – Love Songs

Chemistry – A scientific field in which you can win a Nobel Prize or a description of what happens when people come together. In the case of Rebel Rebel, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, it’s a singer with a background in the Swedish Ballet School, a producer and musician who’s also active in the band Katakomb and a DJ/producer who’s heavily involved in the club scene. Resembling the Okapi, Rebel Rebel looks like a rather unconventional mixture but just like the animal itself, makes for an exotic reality. A band that truly knows what they want…

With pop-drenched futuristic disco productions and remixes they are ready to hit the world with a bang, just like their spirit guides and source of inspiration ABBA did when, according to some, the world was a more exciting place. Those with a keen ear could probably also draw parallels to the more modern sounds of Chromeo and Areoplane. “Love Songs” is Rebel Rebel’s debut single.

WE LUV U + WE MISS U PACKAGE

Boy, its good to be back! An even better to be back, when you know that you haven’t been away in the first place – haha! Quite simply put, if the surge of sales in vinyl records can reach back up to 40% within the UK, then anything is possible in the fantastic world of electronic dance music.

In remembrance of that fact plus giving praise to the recently awarded Greatest Dance Act of All Time by Mixmag magazine. This package of four vigorous gems covers a satisfying pleasure from no other than The Prodigy, Chase & Status (who will be headlining the South West Four festival in August 2012 @ Clapham Common, UK), The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin and The Charlatans.

Crank it up Aerials because it’s about to get loud in ‘ere!

Africa

This track comes from a fellow blogger [warm kitten] who has decided to attempt to remake Toto’s Africa with a more contemporary, electronic feel to it. Pretty impressive first attempt to say the least. Below is what came with the track.

Featured on warm kitten:

Having DJed at a number of weddings recently I’ve become rather fond of the dusty jams that keep the dance floor packed n sweaty for hours. Amongst old mo-town hits, Darryl Braithwaite keeps me perplexed and the words of Toto’s Africa always escape me, and everyone else. But hey. They make for a great time. So I’m gonna attempt a number of remakes (under a new moniker) of songs of such caliber. they’re not designed for weddings (!) but for whenever you feel fit. Here’s attempt number one:

Africa by Moments.

Moon Boots – Aretha [Zimmer Remix]

Zimmer’s music brings about a feel good, body-warming, enthusiastic wave that goes straight to the heart – staying until the end of the night. Growing up between France and California, this young producer has found a smooth combination of both worlds: west coast carefree attitude, with a twist of Parisian chic.

Blending 70s Disco, 80s Funk and 90s House, his influences range from George Benson to Crystal Waters, with instant contemporary producers comparisons to Aeroplane, Moullinex and Azari & III.

When not producing, he goes back to his DJ routes and makes people move in low-ceiling clubs and fancy parties, just recently making his USA debut at Los Angeles renowned Cinespace. Making sure the crowd always has a good time, he cultivates the art of mixing à la Larry Levan, playing from 100 to 125 bpm.

Check out these fresh vibes and hit em up on soundcloud.
