Based in Nashville TN, Ugly Kids Club is the music collaboration of Steve Wilson (producer, songwriter, guitarist) and Aliegh Shields (vocalist, lyricist, guitarist). The pair formed in early 2011 when they discovered their shared love for minimalistic rock duos such as Sleigh Bells, Crystal Castles, and The Kills.

Steve is a Grammy Nominated rock producer and songwriter by day working with bands such as The Juliana Theory and Jonezetta. Aliegh is a bartender who grew up on stage and in her bedroom teaching herself guitar. Their contrasting musical backgrounds helped form their unique sound of crunchy beats, fuzzy guitars, and undertones of synth-pop. Check out “My Soul”, off the duo’s self titled debut album released January 10th on iTunes…

Adelaide-based duo MANOR materialized nearly a year ago as Nathaniel Morse began writing and collaborating with Caitlin Duff. Touched by The Beach Boys, Paul Simon, and the blurry brilliance of the Cocteau Twins among others, MANOR makes rich, intricate pop music driven by a jangling guitar, and built atop a foundation of multi-layered percussion. The duo’s first single, “Rhodesia”, inspires wonder while acceding skyward towards a spectacular crescendo where spectral, lilting vocals are aligned with Nathaniel’s icy, reverb-drenched guitar. “Rhodesia” is out now on iTunes, and MANOR’s debut LP is currently being recorded, and is due for release in 2012…

August Eight may or may not have issues with authority, but don’t allow the sporadically surly demeanor to distract from a profound talent that became apparent around age 8. Eight has been an outspoken opponent of self-limitation, and has never believed in stifling other creative urges. Distractions to some, Eight claims his music would be void of it’s signature depth should he be unable to enjoy his alternative artistic pursuits. The primarily self-taught August Eight explains a conspicuous fascination with different genres and artistic mediums by recalling his travels as a citizen of the world; embedding himself amongst our planet’s most exotic societies, soaking up culture, and marveling at indigenous song and dance. A strong believer in not setting limits to what one is capable of, and always overflowing with brilliance, Eight handles his own graphics, photos and website. You might call the 21-year-old Californian an ultra-auteur, who capably produces, mixes and records his own music in a private, self-built studio in the hills above Los Angeles. With plans to release his first official solo project this coming summer, August Eight has been relentlessly writing and producing tracks for an upcoming EP that will mark the beginning of a ceaseless tour of enchantment…

From the people who brought you Suede Ape, comes Modus Pony, the new instrumental solo project from Matt Ackerman. The self titled, debut album is a collection of experimental ideas, born during countless hours of bedroom daydreaming, presented and served to you as a traditional collection of typically succinct pop-songs. The album is a buffet of bite sized, experimental pieces that can be listened to casually, or examined and picked apart meticulously as an extended piece of audio-art. The album is currently available via bandcamp, with two free tracks available for download if you’re looking for something odd yet catchy, while cerebral in a “I-see-what-he-did-there” kind of way….

“…When creating we pour everything out that has been collected in the head during decades of intense listening. One leg is always standing in the green grass of pop while the other leg is out on its own, wandering between places such as dance-floors, sandy beaches, cold concrete and a weightless existence in a bed or a hammock…” – Pallers

The duo known as Pallers is made up of long time friends Henrik Mårtensson and Johan Angergård, who connected while exploring Stockholm’s nocturnal scene, experiencing the glamor of Southern Spain, and slumming it on the floors of German clubs. Now, their first full-length album, The Sea Of Memories, will be available on September 27. The LP was produced and recorded over three years in apartments, basements, villas and cabins in Pallers*, La mar, Stockholm, Miami and Cape Town. (* ‘Pallers’ is the name of a neighborhood where one of the members grew up). Half of the duo is a photographer with a love for ambient, trip hop and electronica while the other is deeply involved in the world of pop, yet Pallers manage to integrate these seemingly incompatible components with a style and grace all their own…

Our buddy Igor Makhlin, AKA SAUR, wanted to introduce us to his best friend Derek Salazar, and his sister Amanda Salazar who make music as The Forest Wall. Their debut collection is five gripping, melodic tracks that manage to illicit emotion while retaining a levity that pairs well with warm evenings. Their EP, entitled “the EP”, is available now via The Forest Wall’s Bandcamp (including a remix by the aforementioned SAUR), and if you’re into tangible releases, those can be had here…

Yes, July is over and the 2011 Pacific Festival is slowly inching it’s way nearer. On Saturday, August 13th The Oak Canyon Ranch (located in Orange County, CA) will play host to a litany of recognizable names, including Cut Copy, Calvin Harris, Toro Y Moi, and recently added headliner, and perhaps our greatest ambassador to west coast hip-hop, Snopp Dogg. We had mentioned previously our appreciation for the single day, concentrated dose of brilliance promised by the 2011 Pacific Festival, and to get you in the mood, the Official 2011 Pacific Festival Sampler is available now!

Model Worker are a four-piece, Windy City outfit specializing in fetching synth and guitar driven music. Since their 2009 inception, the Chicago based group has blended a flurry of analog synthesizers, drum machines, and guitars, and have found themselves neck-deep in the Synth Pop/Disco genre. The band released the EP Squares & Triangles in Fall of 2010 and most recently released the brand new EP Modern Luxury last month, and it’s currently available for download free of charge, and track “Automatic Love” alone is worth paying for, so really a great way to meet the very fun Model Worker…

We have an honourable amount to thank Angel Alanis, Lady Foursquare, Local Hero, Acid Girls, Monologic and Harvard Bass for, as these are the tigers and cougars who make up the Noise Floor, Chicago based Crew. The War Games remix of ‘Nylon Smile,’ continues on from where we left “Portishead’s Third reimagined..” and fully stadium packs its butterfly-excitement, insights ravenous hand-claps-in-sync moments.. and applauds everyone to kick & elbow back those always pushy-people-in-the-crowd-bargers. A world class album, in every respect!

Technologically reclusive, Gold Fields have been less that aggressive when it comes to online promotion, but fortunately that seems to be changing as the band’s resume continues to grow. Since we last heard from them, Gold Fields have played a string of prominent festivals in support of artists like Crystal Castles and Datarock, and hit the road for an extensive sold-out national tour with Australian Music Prize winners, The Holidays. In addition to their recent live achievements, Gold Fields just released their new single “The Woods” which you can enjoy below, along with a pair of excellent remixes of the band’s debut single “Treehouse” we told you about a while back. Gold Fields hit the road again this month with Miami Horror for another sure-to-be sold-out national tour, and they’ve just been announced on Australia’s Parklife tour along with Gossip, Santigold, Death From Above 1979, The Streets and Digitalism….
