The Los Angeles fivesome LonelyTrees consists of Annalee Fery, Amy Wood, Max Braverman, George Linev, and Christian Stone, and their debut, self-titled LP was released this past March. Specifically based in Silverlake, LonelyTrees was formed by Stone (formerly of Campfire Girls) and Ferey (of Monsters Are Waiting), whose past projects have been rooted in alt-rock with heavy use of dream-pop/shoegaze elements. I keep coming back to a far less hazy Blonde Redhead when trying to draw a comparison, as Lonely Trees choose not to bury their vivid vocals or prominent instrumentals. The debut LP has the feel of early stuff from Robin Pecknold or Arcade Fire, in that it clearly has the potential to be appreciated by a mainstream audience while retaining an inherent credibility. The album is not available digitally yet, but for now check out “Flutter” and the track’s corresponding video, and keep watch for further details regarding the digital availability of the debut LP from Lonely Trees…

CARIBOU VIBRATION ENSEMBLE feat. MARSHALL ALLEN : Live
Coming together for a live recording in glorious & Technicolor fashion at the Kutshers Country Club @ All Tomorrow’s Parties in Monticello, New York, on Sunday 13th September 2009, The Caribou Vibration Ensemble took electronica and live performance to a whole new high-jumping level and reached for the unknown horizons with no hindsight in looking back.
Featuring a 15 piece band including Sun Ra’s Marshall Allen, Kieran Hebden from Four Tet, Koushil Ghosh from Koushik, Luke Lalonde from Born Ruffians, a five piece horn section, and four capable drummers all screaming “mine, mine, mine …” This Sunday night event was produced and played with a rich Canadian love, and now its available in 2011 as a whopping free download courtesy of Dundas, Ontario’s Caribou, and their Vibration Ensemble – bestowing performance & longevity to the entire universe.

VOXHAUL BROADCAST – “Leaving On The 5th”
VOXHAUL BROADCAST have been local darlings for a while, but one of LA’s more celebrated indie acts look to expand their horizons with the release of their long awaited debut full-length, Timing Is Everything. With production from Tom Biller, the quartet was in good hands as they endeavored to encapsulate the power of their live presence, while maintaining a signature blend of R&B, rock and soul. The lead track from Timing Is Everything is “Leaving On The 5th,” and it’s corresponding video was premiered by AOL Spinner on April 13. The clip features Sam Buchanan and Matan Grunseit, and was directed by Justin Franklin, who notes, “My inspiration was Thomas Edison’s’ Serpentine Dance’ on hand-tinted film. Its timeless beauty is both psychedelic and romantic. Each choice I made, from location to lenses, had to possess one of these elements which, in the end, would take the viewer on an emotional journey, seamlessly interweaving each feeling.” Check out the video and the track below as well as another stellar offering from Timing Is Everything, “Cheetah”, and the LP can be streamed in it’s entirety via VOXHAUL’s Bandcamp…
YEAH YEAH YEAHS x4 Acoustic Special
The words ‘Deluxe’ and ‘Edition’ can either bring annoyance or pure joy into core music fans, so with a swift flick of a ‘has-its-own-mind’ repeat button and a hindsighted, present Caribou-outlook, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s blitz’s back four acoustic numbers softly for all those nursing a hangover or taking care of a bigger one courtesy of William’s n’ Kate’s royal-knees-up.
TimPermanent – “Marker” EP
TimPermanent’s vocals have a serenity that welcomes accompaniment by a warm, acoustic guitar, and even against cold synthetics, his cadence retains a heartfelt earnestness that rarely works well when paired with electronica. Before his work as a soloist, the Silverlake based artist co-founded the band Testosterone Kills, and the lineage between the two projects is not so difficult to trace. He’s been injecting the inherent sentiment of a campfire folk tune into songs replete with sequencers, samplers and synths for a while now.
His debut album Record was released as a USB-jumper and contained 14 songs written, produced, performed and recorded by TimPermanent himself. His live resume includes stops at local landmarks Viper Room, Roxy, and Key Club, and a nice gig opening for Fantasia, Deborah Cox and Adam Lambert at LA Pride 2009. TimPermanent is currently gearing up to tour and promote his new, five song EP entitled Marker, that includes track “Asymmetrical”. I suppose it should be no surprise, considering Testosterone Kills had a folk influence, but after each listen to “Asymmetrical”, I spend a few moments pondering what it would have sounded like had Cat Stevens used a Moog…
Suede Ape – Dr. Dre Drinks Dr. Pepper
Suede Ape began as an idea by guitarist and producer Geoff Rowan. He conspired to record a jam session, rich with engrossing guitar improve, and edit it into something with less languish, that could appeal to an audience. Rowan needed to, firstly, amass hours of material, before he could chisel it down, and that meant reaching out to Andrew Monzon and Matt Ackerman who, between the pair, are musically proficient in whatever you need, including electronic elements such as kaos pads, drum pads and synths. Each member also brings a unique range of influences, including Weezer, Sabath, Fugazi, and apparently Geoff and I have been nurturing similar Mars Volta obsessions, so things are eclectic and genres are heavily blended. A jam session is primarily intended for experimentation and improvisation, and those more free-flowing moments needed to be vivid, yet concentrated, without being stifled, and that balance is as difficult to achieve as it sounds. There’s a very apparent vulnerability in sharing your most candid moments as a musician, and allowing people to hear you grind away for hours, to yield less than four magically harmonic moments. This “illegitimate brain baby of producer and guitarist Geoff Rowan” has ended up as seven cathartic tracks available now via bandcamp and (as this was a one time jam) it’s our only memento, so savor the journey… You can preview just a few of those “magically harmonic moments” while enjoying “Dr Dre Drinks Dr Pepper”…
Youth Sounds – It’s Hell
Anything even mildly resembling neo-shoegaze/dreampop will usually cause me to rubberneck as I did during the first ten seconds of “Smoke and Mirrors” by Youth Sounds. The completely self-produced New Orleans ensemble was originally conceived by siblings Federico and Erika Mejia, who developed a love of music at an early age, and participated in church choirs when their parents could not longer afford music lessons. In August of 2010 Youth Sounds debuted the short but sweet Bit Parts EP, after adding additional members Adrian Frye and Taryn Mejia to help fill things out. Last February’s Tomorow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow… was the second formal collection for a group who has garnered a fair amount of praise, despite a reality brief assimilation period. So, as good as the material has been thus far, it might all just be a prelude. “It’s Hell” is undoubtedly (and ironically) the most lighthearted number off Tomorow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow… Erika Mejia’s breathy vocals stir memories of Elizabeth Fraser and Beth Gibbons, and sound amazing on the out of character, guitar driven track. If the progression between The Bit Parts EP, and Tomorow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow… is any indication, there’s a hell of an LP lurking out there…
HE’S MY BROTHER SHE’S MY SISTER – “Tales That I Tell” (Live at Pappy and Harriet’s)
Nestled deep within California’s Morongo Basin, the tiny desert outpost of Pioneertown welcomed THE NEW L.A. FOLK FEST to legendary roadhouse Pappy and Harriet’s. I’m not sure I can articulate the ambiance, but the warm, radiant glow of Pappy and Harriet’s was an idyllic haven for folk fans brave enough to mix it up with a junior snow flurry.
The festival was an intimate gathering intended to promote and document new folk music in Los Angeles as it happens. The lineup consisted of Amanda Jo Williams, Tommy Santee Klaws, Turn On The Sunlight, DJs Carlos Niño & Andres Renteria, Mia Doi Todd, The Driftwood Singers, Emily Lacy and the nostalgic sounds of He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, whose Saturday night set was the weekend’s centerpiece.
Alongside brother Robert, and flanked to the left by tap dancer Lauren Brown, Rachel Kolar donned a stunning red gown during the revivalist’s stirring set of blues inspired folk. It was a great couple of days that will hopefully remain an annual weekend devoted to sustaining, and further cultivating a Los Angeles folk scene that many of us have grown very proud of.
Getting to the high desert in the best of conditions can be a bit of a trek, so enjoy this live version of “Tales That I Tell” preformed by He’s My Brother She’s My Sister on Saturday night at Pappy and Harriet’s. Thanks to master sound recordist Benjamin Tierney, you can enjoy every set, from every band at lafolkfest.com in stunning clarity beginning this Monday…

AMATORSKI – Same Stars We Shared EP [Munich / Vynilla Vinyl]
Belgium seems to be a highly progressive country for when it comes to exceptional and immense artists rolling out like a production line on a VERY regular basis.
But unlike a dirty production line belt (where everything is the bleemin’ same), Soulwax aka 2manyDjs, the duo formally known as Aeroplane, legendary Trance producer & DJ, M.I.K.E. aka PUSH, have all gone on to become staple dance icons and worldwide electronic dance music legends.
Now in 2011, it seems that we have a new jewel in the making… And this Jewel of the Scheldt is being perfectly modeled into the form of a glistening gemstone called the brilliant Amatorski.
Gentleness, subtlety, precision and poise are all features needed to gain a powerful sound outward from very minimal effort used. As this mere EP only lists four tracks that force the listener to ditch all of the common sounds they may or may not be used to, in the same breath it brings the listener back very quickly to an soft aura which they will find very comfortable to listen to again and again consistently.
‘Come Home’ has this unbelievable modern-day-classic elegance to it, which sets it apart from the rest and makes it the leading track winner here. ‘The King’ follows in suite (no pun intended), with a very melancholy feel in its air and accompanied with butterfly-like, xylophone twinkles and miniscule droplets of icey-cold wintery magic.
‘Same Stars We Shared’ sums up what the real alternative sound is all about and ‘My Favourite Work of Art’ is as sad and as orchestral as a silent mime in Covent Garden’s market square.
EP in all, it’s a starry eyed ten out of ten. And for further information on the glorious Amatorski, take a little tinkle over to that mighty conglomerate known as iTunes for more tip toe, aural tweakings and more wholesome aural dives into a river of sensational destiny.
(Or better yet, keep locked onto Aerial Noise.com for further news….)

Fredrik – White On White
Swedish folk geniuses Fredrik stumble back to us with the stunning single White On White. Originally a duo, the project is back sporting a third member being Anna Moberg. Her touch adds to the soft spoken soundscapes the guys were kinda famous for. I use the term kinda because I’m not too sure how big they were outside of Europe but nonetheless I have been following them since the Trilogi EP (which also fantastic). If you have the time I would seriously recommend grabbing yourself a copy. As for White On White, the chimes and soothing choir backdrop are one of a kind. Being light and dreamy it’s absolutely perfect for this time of the year.
The new three track EP Origami released November 16, 2010. It’s available digitally and as a limited edition 7” as The Kora Records celebrates their 7th year as a label with a new 7” series.
Go grab your copy today on itunes.
Florence + The Machine – Cosmic Love
A classic from Florence & the Machine turned magnificent remix comes to us in Cosmic Love, an encompassing soft electric melody that will clog your pores and lift your spirits. Flor uses that eclectic voice that makes her so unique within the industry. I love her stuff- (find more here). The short club edit is dynamic and innovative. Its been a longtime favourite of mine for awhile now.
The original version of “Cosmic Love” arrived as a single on July 5.10. Buy more Florence & The Machine here.
time to celebrate!
A lot has been accomplished over the last few days. We lengthened the show listings section on the right sidebar to cover most of the next couple months. If we have left anything out that you know of please let us know via comment or email. As for the content, the next couple months look pretty decent if you can pull yourself away from any obligations you may already have. Initial stuff that catches my attention is the April 9th/11th trio of MSTRKRFT, Crookers, & Steve Aoki set to hit Toronto/Montreal respectively. The Twelves come to Toronto March 26th. Calvin Harris is in town on the 27th, and if you can still get tickets check in on A-Trak in Toronto May 13th. Anyway I won’t spoil all the goods, check the listing for more and keep updated for new listings marked with an asterisk (*).
To keep the positive mood flowing it appears like I may actually survive this week. Somehow I have managed to stay atop everything, which is pretty sweet. So in part to celebrate the new addition to the site and the weekend on the horizon (hump day!), here’s a random tasty batch to check out. Keep the music flowing.
