Ugly Kids Club – “My Soul”

Based in Nashville TN, Ugly Kids Club is the music collaboration of Steve Wilson (producer, songwriter, guitarist) and Aliegh Shields (vocalist, lyricist, guitarist).  The pair formed in early 2011 when they discovered their shared love for minimalistic rock duos such as Sleigh BellsCrystal Castles, and The Kills.

Steve is a Grammy Nominated rock producer and songwriter by day working with bands such as The Juliana Theory and Jonezetta.  Aliegh is a bartender who grew up on stage and in her bedroom teaching herself guitar.  Their contrasting musical backgrounds helped form their unique sound of crunchy beats, fuzzy guitars, and undertones of synth-pop. Check out “My Soul”, off the duo’s self titled debut album released  January 10th on iTunes…

The Beijing Gang ‘Dongdan EP’

“Dongdan” is the first single from a new album’ The Beijing Gang’ by producer and composer  Chris Bemand. Chris has released many innovative electronic albums since his early days with acid jazzsters Marden Hill and filmic Chill Out group 45 Dip. He has collaborated with Ashley Beedle ( Ballistic Brothers/Xpress 2)  Rob Dougan,(Clubbed to Death) and Mark Doyle (Hed Kandi) .  As well as a large discography, Chris has written and produced countless scores for all kinds of TV shows including mainstream cartoon series, Bafta nominated Skunk Fu! and King Arthur’s Disasters. He’s also known for writing choral stings for top shows including the X-Factor and Top Gear.

Dongdan is a clever, quirky fusion of classical Chinese instruments paired with contemporary beats as has ever been heard before. Chris recorded in Beijing with a handful of virtuoso musicians from Peking Opera and the resulting blend is original and unique. Chris also worked with film director Ed Bignell to produce a series of promotional videos (shot in Beijing) to accompany each single release.

Chris explains ‘I was in Beijing and found the most vibrant club scene, but they were playing generic Western music.  I couldn’t understand why no home grown music was being played in the clubs and bars so I decided to experiment.”  Chris set up a studio in Beijing and put his huge experience and creativity to the task of creating something modern, danceable and interesting whilst keeping the integrity of the Far Eastern flavour of the music intact. “All the musicians on the album are at the top of their game but most had never played on Western Music before and couldn’t imagine a fusion of the two styles,” commented Chris.  “They were all knocked out with the finished tracks. The album is intricate but cool, a real feast for the aural senses.”

Squirky Music Ltd is a new label which releases eclectic and original filmic music.

Alex Fedorov – “Last Forever”

A refreshing advancement of the established post-rock premise, self-taught guitar prodigy Alex Fedorov’s nuanced, polished sound offers an alluring modernity, while still retaining a depth and complexity reminiscent of The Album Leaf or Mogwai. Fedorov seamlessly weaves elements of Heavy Metal, Ambient, Trance, and Classical to craft a signature sound that transcends genre lines, and appeals to a vast array of tastes.  Currently unsigned, Fedorov continues to work out of Bedrock Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, and his already extensive library of material can be further explored at http://www.reverbnation.com/alexfedorov

August Eight Ft. Nina Foot – “Love Trip”

August Eight may or may not have issues with authority, but don’t allow the sporadically surly demeanor to distract from a profound talent that became apparent around age 8. Eight has been an outspoken opponent of self-limitation, and has never believed in stifling other creative urges. Distractions to some, Eight claims his music would be void of it’s signature depth should he be unable to enjoy his alternative artistic pursuits. The primarily self-taught August Eight explains a conspicuous fascination with different genres and artistic mediums by recalling his travels as a citizen of the world; embedding himself amongst our planet’s most exotic societies, soaking up culture, and marveling at indigenous song and dance. A strong believer in not setting limits to what one is capable of, and always overflowing with brilliance, Eight handles his own graphics, photos and website. You might call the 21-year-old Californian an ultra-auteur, who capably produces, mixes and records his own music in a  private, self-built studio in the hills above Los Angeles. With plans to release his first official solo project this coming summer, August Eight has been relentlessly writing and producing tracks for an upcoming EP that will mark the beginning of a ceaseless tour of enchantment…

Mint Julep – “Aviary” (Mogwai Remix)

Mint Julep is the husband and wife team of Keith and Hollie Kenniff, and they continue to produce the lustrous modern pop music that sets us adrift atop a cloud of bubbles. Keith Kenniff is best known as the brains behind dulcet ambient/electronic practitioners Helios and Goldmund, and he has also composed music for Harmony Korine’s ‘Mister Lonely’ and the trailer for Sam Mendes’  Revolutionary Road. The forthcoming album, Save Your Season, will be made available on the 19th of November on Village Green, but for now, check out track “Aviary” remixed by our favorite post- rock Scotts Mogwai, as well as the music video for another of Save Your Season’s tracks, “Days Gone By”…

Modus Pony – “Modus Pony” LP

From the people who brought you Suede Ape, comes Modus Pony, the new instrumental solo project from Matt Ackerman. The self titled, debut album is a collection of experimental ideas, born during countless hours of bedroom daydreaming, presented and served to you as a traditional collection of typically succinct pop-songs. The album is a buffet of bite sized, experimental pieces that can be listened to casually, or examined and picked apart meticulously as an extended piece of audio-art. The album is currently available via bandcamp, with two free tracks available for download if you’re looking for something odd yet catchy, while cerebral in a “I-see-what-he-did-there” kind of way….

NYC singer Selena Mars.  Her new single “Disco Fever” was produced and written by Revolution 9, and it will be released on September 6 via Scarab Records.  Enjoy a very cinematic teaser-trailer for the video and song that should mark the beginning of Selena’s coming out party…

Mario Basanov – Lonely Days EP

Mario Basanov is a grade A producer, studio weapon machine, and is surely heading for world domination. Still in his twenties but with a solid ten years of production experience behind his back Mario is the one to watch. House, Disco and Broken Beat, – Mario’s creative work shows all of these are just names not boundaries.

What really surprises people is Mario’s scope and versatility. He’s as gifted and comfortable with producing remixes for major label pop stars as when he is creating dancefloor destroyers for the underground dance music arena.

To date Mario’s work as a solo project or as part of his collaborations with co-producer Vidis has gained fans in Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Laurent Garnier, Toby Tobias, Pete Herbert, and many many others.

Back in 2009 Mario revealed his love affair with a more sentimental Disco and Deep House sound. Deep piano stomper Up, chugging synth mastery of Do you Remember? and the amazing balearic sun infused Caribbean Girl are just a hint of what Mario is set to achieve with his own productions.

Now in 2011 Mario lines up his first release of the year ‘Lonely Days’. This is his first full vocal song and once again demonstrates the young producers versatility (even the vocal is sung by Mario himself!). Mario Basanov may not be the most familiar name to most but get ready to hear it a whole lot more.

Lonely Trees – Flutter

The Los Angeles fivesome LonelyTrees consists of Annalee Fery, Amy Wood, Max Braverman, George Linev, and Christian Stone, and their debut, self-titled LP was released this past March. Specifically based in Silverlake, LonelyTrees was formed by Stone (formerly of Campfire Girls)  and Ferey (of Monsters Are Waiting), whose past projects have been rooted in alt-rock with heavy use of dream-pop/shoegaze elements. I keep coming back to a far less hazy Blonde Redhead when trying to draw a comparison, as Lonely Trees choose not to bury their vivid vocals or prominent instrumentals. The debut LP has the feel of early stuff from Robin Pecknold or Arcade Fire, in that it clearly has the potential to be appreciated by a mainstream audience while retaining an inherent credibility. The album is not available digitally yet, but for now check out  “Flutter” and the track’s corresponding video, and keep watch for further details regarding the digital availability of the debut LP from Lonely Trees…

VOXHAUL BROADCAST – “Leaving On The 5th”

VOXHAUL BROADCAST have been local darlings for a while, but one of LA’s more celebrated indie acts look to expand their horizons with the release of their long awaited debut full-length, Timing Is Everything. With production from Tom Biller, the quartet was in good hands as they endeavored to encapsulate the power of their live presence, while maintaining a signature blend of R&B, rock and soul. The lead track from Timing Is Everything is “Leaving On The 5th,” and it’s corresponding video was premiered by AOL Spinner on April 13. The clip features  Sam Buchanan and Matan Grunseit, and was directed by Justin Franklin, who notes, “My inspiration was Thomas Edison’s’ Serpentine Dance’ on hand-tinted film. Its timeless beauty is both psychedelic and romantic. Each choice I made, from location to lenses, had to possess one of these elements which, in the end, would take the viewer on an emotional journey, seamlessly interweaving each feeling.” Check out the video and the track below as well as another stellar offering from Timing Is Everything, “Cheetah”, and the LP can be streamed in it’s entirety via VOXHAUL’s Bandcamp
