CHASE & STATUS – No More Idols [Mercury]

Monday, January 31st, 2011

2011 will yet be another year to mark off for the mighty drum & bass empire known as Chase & Status.

Empowered by success and having the honour of name-checking Andy C, Pendulum, Skream and DJ Hype as some of their own personal fans, Saul Milton and Will Kennard will indeed go on to create even more of a name for themselves especially as far as the BBC Radio 1 playlist goes & their internal fan base @ Portland Place HQ.

Featuring an album which is stacked with guest collaborators such as Dizzee Rascal and Sub Focus, “No More Idols” rolls out with relentless diversity with drum & bass being its ultimate foundation.

We set aside three tracks which compliment “No More Idols” in its best light, but as it’s the people who really decide, then feel free to check out any of their links below for more action on all things Chasey drum & Status bass!

COSMIC GATE – Back 2 The Future (The Classics 1999–2003 Remixed) [Black Hole Recordings]

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Globetrotters, DJs extraordinaire and two great fellas to boot, Stefan ‘Bossi’ Bossems and Nic Chagall release a king-size whopper of a Back 2 The Future album listing eight of their own tunes on showcase by updating them for today’s audiences and by bringing in the help of some already long standing, future trance stars in the making.

Making reference to Cosmic Gate’s interview quotes taken from Black Hole Recordings official advert mail out, they talk about their reasons behind this concept.

“Back 2 The Future is an album born largely out of a necessity for us,” says Bossi. “Wherever we DJ we’re always met with requests to play tracks from the first two Cosmic Gate albums. As time has gone by sounds have changed, music’s changed and it’s become progressively tougher to program many of them into our sets. We still love them; the audience still loves them, but in their current form they no longer sit right… so we decided to remedy the situation.”

Nic continues: “we thought we’d start by testing the water with a couple of tracks that we’d reworked ourselves. The responses we got were really something and that pushed us on towards a full album. Both Bossi and I are continually inspired by many different types of electronic dance music, so whilst we wanted plenty of trance remixes on there, we also felt it would also be good to spread the mixes wide and bring other styles into play”.

And BOY are they right! – As this package is utterly spectacular!

***************************************************

Even though this entire compilation is a perfect example of great electronic dance music overall, glorious and exceptional moments in this package include Jochen Miller’s take on ‘Back To Earth,’ John O’Callaghan’s unbelievable Main Room belter on ‘Melt To The Ocean’ and Alexander Popov’s stunning dub mix on ‘Raging.’

All three are truly inspirational snapshots into some great trance melodies and give any outsider a perfect snapshot into timely note structures and original key changes within this journey.

Jan Johnston makes an always welcomed appearance with her part anthem & part gentle vocal, and enriches ‘Raging’ to a level of sublime aura. Daniel Kandi’s interpretation of ‘Human Beings’ is noted alongside this track also, as his remix has more depth and emotion running through it then most humans stuck on a packed train for 3 hours. Just timeless!

For housier minds abound, then direct your ears over the charms of Dirty Herz voyage into ‘Exploration Of Space,’ Belgium’s own Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike remixing the same track too or take a relaxed listen to DJ Delicious’ muffin-filling bite on ‘Fire Wire’ also.

Cosmic Gate’s Back 2 The Future remix on ‘Exploration Of Space’ and this entire release goes towards an era where Marty McFly could never have dreamed of. And with production stars like the ones mentioned above or whether its Markus Schulz, Arnej or Arty, the audio-whips have truly come out in stadium like fashion in all of its most exciting and thrilling glory.

Futuristic, uplifting, clear vision – sums up this DeLorean quite nicely folks, so if ever there was a sanctuary named the “Electronic Dance Music Hall Of Fame” then Cosmic Gate as performers and artists would most definitely deserve an induction into that entire Class Of Greatness.

Cold War Kids – Mine Is Yours LP

Monday, January 31st, 2011

The Cold War Kids were formed in a historical hotbed for fresh and avant music, Fullerton, California. Their initial demos were recorded in Whittier, they established themselves in Long Beach, and during the summer of 2006 the rest of the country began paying attention to a band that I bend over backwards to remind people is from where I’m from.

The title track to their third LP, Mine is Yours, comes chock full of drama, and incites things with a tense build, and some killer tribal drums. The instrumentals are as vivid as ever, and the out of character “Cold Toes On The Floor” is a heavily blues influenced highlight. I would say “Sensitive Kid”, which puts a drum machine to good use, along with  “Bulldozer” are indicative of the record’s overall apprehensive demeanor. A US tour kicks off in early march, and the entire album (released by Downtown Records)  is available to stream via the Cold War Kids myspace page.

HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR – Blind (Hercules Club Mix) [DFA]

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Produced by Tim Goldsworthy (one ½ of the DFA), Andrew Butler (aka Mr. INTL) and sung by Antony Hegarty (from the infamous Antony And The Johnsons) is a underrated electronic/disco classic from off the DFA stable.

Hercules & Love Affair have just recently released a new album called “Blue Songs,” on Moshi Moshi Records which covers the art of hearing disco and electronica in a whole new light. So if you’re a fan of Hercules And Love Affair already and you like a bit of The Glimmers also, then I would suggest for you to check out their new album – sharpish! – cos you’ll probably drool over that idea already!

Blind’ is a sentimental track which uplifts in the same breath and relaxes in melody. It works subtly well on the dancefloor and impacts the listener at home too.

The house legend known as Frankie Knuckles has also remixed this single, so if its touched the heartstrings of that geezer then you know that the Original Mix has to be half decent as well!

Patrick Wolf + Richard X [Hideout Recordings]

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Following Patrick Wolf’s last single, Time Of My Life, he is back with yet another brilliant single entitled, The City, and the one and only Richard X has been granted the opportunity to crack it.

The remixed release comes as an accent to the announcement of the 2011 UK Tour set to take off this March. Expect the album to follow with an official release date scheduled for May 2011 coming off the brand new label Hideout Recordings.

Discussing the new single, Patrick says: “The City’ saved my life. Living in central London, I woke up one broody morning having booked some studio time. It was a hot summers day and in the midst of the protests against the banks and BBC6 Music closing down. Seeing how the recession had worked its way into peoples relationships and ambitions, I went to my piano and started to fight against the negative by writing in the positive.”

Enter Patrick Wolf’s personal website to see the original video for The City.

AMATORSKI – Same Stars We Shared EP [Munich / Vynilla Vinyl]

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Belgium seems to be a highly progressive country for when it comes to exceptional and immense artists rolling out like a production line on a VERY regular basis.

But unlike a dirty production line belt (where everything is the bleemin’ same), Soulwax aka 2manyDjs, the duo formally known as Aeroplane, legendary Trance producer & DJ, M.I.K.E. aka PUSH, have all gone on to become staple dance icons and worldwide electronic dance music legends.

Now in 2011, it seems that we have a new jewel in the making… And this Jewel of the Scheldt is being perfectly modeled into the form of a glistening gemstone called the brilliant Amatorski.

Gentleness, subtlety, precision and poise are all features needed to gain a powerful sound outward from very minimal effort used. As this mere EP only lists four tracks that force the listener to ditch all of the common sounds they may or may not be used to, in the same breath it brings the listener back very quickly to an soft aura which they will find very comfortable to listen to again and again consistently.

‘Come Home’ has this unbelievable modern-day-classic elegance to it, which sets it apart from the rest and makes it the leading track winner here. ‘The King’ follows in suite (no pun intended), with a very melancholy feel in its air and accompanied with butterfly-like, xylophone twinkles and miniscule droplets of icey-cold wintery magic.

Same Stars We Shared’ sums up what the real alternative sound is all about and ‘My Favourite Work of Art’ is as sad and as orchestral as a silent mime in Covent Garden’s market square.

EP in all, it’s a starry eyed ten out of ten. And for further information on the glorious Amatorski, take a little tinkle over to that mighty conglomerate known as iTunes for more tip toe, aural tweakings and more wholesome aural dives into a river of sensational destiny.

(Or better yet, keep locked onto Aerial Noise.com for further news….)

CUT COPY – Zonoscope [Modular]

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Formed in the realms of Melbourne, Australia in the year 2001 is a band named Cut Copy. Cut from a creative looking cloth featuring Dan Whitford on lead vocals, keys & guitar, Tim Hoey on bass & guitar and Mitchell Scott on drums, these guys are the Aussie equivalent to UK’s Hot Chip (but with a little bit more punch for your drum beats!).

Kicking off with the spacey album opener ‘Need You Now,’ it reminds me of a sound that Giorgio Moroder was most famous for, as well as the vocal on this track being almost U2-like towards the end. ‘Take Me Over’ reminds me of well-famous 80’s pop track, which has slipped my mind in writing this review, but it almost sounds like its about to kick into that track in question, but teases and stops before continuing with Cut Copy’s trademark sounds. Wonderful!

‘Aisha’ comes off as a pleasant n’ smooth, near-psychedelic rock track which harkens to the name known as Aisha, whilst ‘Pharaohs & Pyramids’ stands out as one of my favourites with the old skool, acid house vibe about it.

Precious synth patterns, downtempo moments and quality rock stabs are showcased throughout this LP, but we’ve set aside four teasers for you to give an indication of where their inspirations have lead them and where we think they could be possibly heading in the future.

Overall, its a good’en C.C!

JASON CAINE – Spring Load [Zimbalam]

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Based from out of the United Kingdom with his debut release on Zimbalam, Jason Caine produces a momentous journey into the multiple textures we know now as electronic dance music.

Alright, enough of the John Peel analogises for a smooth but interesting intro.. this track and its remix rocks! An uplifting track doesn’t necessary have to be bangin’ and Jason seems to have captured an essence of part (old skool) Timo Maas with a sprinkling of (old skool) James Holden – with a dashing of (a more recent) Nathan Fake.

Accompanied with a delightful Nick Qusmann Remix to get even more house music mouths watering, you’re on a path to discover over 9 minutes of Original dance & electronic genius that can be played by all types of forward thinking warm up and main room DJs.

Featuring audio dimensions that will lead into positive, after hour DJ set-frolics or for those who love surrounding EDM senses, this release will cater for that need also.

If this is the start of a new pure bred house & progressive star, then the future will be AS brighter than a certain UK actor & film star named Michael.

Spring Load this one on play!

RIHANNA – S&M (Sidney Samson Dub) [Def Jam]

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

For a track title which promotes the form of sexual role playing under the word set of Sadomasochism, we will quickly sprint away from making any cheesy comments about Rihanna’s Original material and head swiftly towards the safe haven of Sidney Samson’s ‘no vocals & no Dutch Edam’ production.

Sometimes ‘less is definitely more’ and on a package of mixes that unfortunately do feature the wailings of Miss S&M’s vocal, the pick of the bunch out of these oranges really does have to be Sidney Samson’s terrific Dub mix.

Samson is known primarily for one of his most over-cained tracks of 2009 (without forgetting Mr. Wizard Sleeve too) called ‘Riverside (Let’s Go!).’ But since then, he has churned out some better and more linear productions such as his remix on Martin Solveig’s ‘Hello,’ his collaboration with DJ Gregory named ‘Dama S Salon’ (on Defected Records) and finally a great partnership with American DJ Steve Aoki called ‘Wake Up Call.’ For which all of them are blinding.

All three of those tracks (mentioned above) showcase a style in which when executed properly can achieve a fullness of creativity & sound that can remain both inspiring and exceptional.

So for a remix of Miss S&M’s which is part housey and part trancey, then we’ve got ourselves an underground chocolate pudding that gets one of our fingers covered with a tasty sugar glazed mixture, but doesn’t entice us to stick our whole arms n’ head into the ruddy, bloody thing..

Turn it up!!

Paul – Together Again

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Paul is terrific, absolutely terrific. His half nu Italo/half French house beats are insanely good at picking up any dance party. The new track Together Again did just that this weekend so I’m sure it will do the same for you. It’s a wonder why not many others are catching on to the talented Frenchman’s beats. But who knows, maybe time’s on his side?

The bonus today has a few other Paul songs from the archive. The More Than A Feelin’ bit should be recognizable to most of you as it takes the hook straight from the Boston chorus. The other two, Take Me To The Limit and Blue Lagoon, are equally fantastic mixes that have great dance vibes. All good for your all night party.

LADYTRON – Ace Of Hz (Tiësto Remix) [Nettwerk]

Friday, January 28th, 2011

A magical piece of subtle and unique electronic dance music remixed to perfection by Mixmag’s recently awarded “Greatest DJ Of All Time” – Tiësto.

Taking a beautiful but yet rocking Original to elevating heights is what’s on offer here for a lovely 7 mins and 26 seconds.

Strangely enough the main vocals don’t distract away from the overall backing of the production, so for Tijs/Ladytron’s latest audio trip into ace of hearts heaven you have a remix which complements the Original, as well as a produced-backing that’s distinctive and credible for the mighty remixer in question.

Why couldn’t Ladytron and Tiësto have happened sooner?

‘Ace Of Hz’ drops on Monday 13th March 2011.

THE JAPANESE POPSTARS – Controlling Your Allegiance LP [Virgin/EMI]

Friday, January 28th, 2011

I am stunned. For a trio outlet that was hyped up to the hills in 2008 after their debut LP “We Just Are” dropped, TJP have managed to outlast the honeymoon period and have delivered a ‘less is more’ type LP that covers all ground – pro EDM (Electronic Dance Music).

The tracks ‘Destroy’ and ‘Let Go’ rain in the brilliant undertones of the words Soundsystem and LCD, whilst ‘Song For Lisa’ has a great ring of a mid-album Chemical Brothers track-influence to it.

‘Fight The Night,’ ‘Catapult’ and ‘Falcon Punch’ are individually three tracks which staple the ever evolving sound of The Japanese Popstars and make this group what they are in 2011.

Established fans will love this brand new LP, whilst newcomers to their sound who like things a bit soft & hard will cherish this one for repeated listens. So from one fan to the next, get your speaker knobs turned up to Max, your pretty dancing shoes and Ugg boots on, and start rockin’ that head from back n’ forth, cos you sure will smile for sure! The Japanese Popstars never sounded finer!!

The release date for “Controlling Your Allegiance” lands on your doorstep come the 13th June 2011, so I’m sure it couldn’t come soon enough!

RÖYKSOPP – Tricky Tricky (Remixes) [Wall Of Sound]

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Röyksopp have made a golden like chess move again and have teamed up with the legendary vocalist, Karin Dreijer from Swedish über-group The Knife.

Her voice seems to be like the audio equivalent to a ‘never-stomach-filling’ honey enriched bowl of Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. Or to you and me, its loveable, exciting and when you hear it mega-loud on the dance floor, it just makes you wanna dance some more!

When you look back on the excellence of Röyksopp’s back catalogue of remixes since the year 2000, the quality control speaks for itself. ‘Tricky Tricky‘ follows in suite and manages to instil a progressive greatness out from remixers Days Off, Insinio and True Identity.

Normandie makes it his own with some sensational, alternative dance stabs throughout and SoundSAM takes the tempo down a notch with lots of electro type vibrations which should cater for the brilliant, eclectic, fans out there.

So for a single which looks more like an LP release, there is enough mixes to cater for everybody.

And even more milk left in the jar for your next bowl the following morning!!

Chantola + Lenno – If All That Glitter Is Gold

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Lenno is a 15 year old house madness producer from Espoo, Finland who is making phenomenal disco straight out of his kitchen and serving it hot to the world.

He is talented, young, and full of potential. And quite possibly one of the greatest producers to come my way over the last few months. There is a lot of good stuff about to come his way and luckily our ears are the one’s who benefit.

Check out his brand new mix to Chantola’s If All That Glitter Is Gold below and be sure to follow him over on soundcloud and facebook.
