A Gift From Leonardus

I checked my e-mail this morning and to my delight Leonardus had sent over a free copy of his latest remix. I first came across Leonardus when I heard his Womanizer EP and have been a huge fan ever since. His latest record release was a collaboration with Quinten 909 which was called Heartbreak, you can pick it up here. A great release I highly suggest you check it out, it’s disco house at its best.

And finally this remix of Daft Punk is an oldie but I still listen to it frequently.

Round Up #5: Monarchy, Diamond Cut, Warrior One, Foals

Sorry for falling off the face of the earth. Another week being buried in books is coming, and another week in music has past… here’s whats helping me ease the pain:

I finally stumbled into a digital copy of The Phoenix Alive this week by Monarchy. I’ve listened to it a couple of times from secondary sources but it’s nice to have something to pass on [See Monarchy past - 1 | 2 | 3 | 4]. The UK duo started spread many light disco delights across the blogosphere last year with Gold In The Fire and since have really honed their own style. As a bonus we included another remix from Kris Menace.

If you want more hit hypem for tons more accessible goodies to boost your library with including another remix from Hot City on The Phoenix Alive; but if you’re just looking for a listen, take a gander across  Monarchy’s myspace for more gems.

Diamond Cut beats are sensationally epic. This new mix to the brand new artist in M’Black’s Heartbreak is no different. The NY guys know how to spread some infectious disco vibes. For more Diamond Cut stuff, check out some old stuff we posted here… you won’t be disappointed.

Warrior One tosses up a dirty mix to Foreign Office’s Leaving The House. There’s lots of great elements within so I hope you enjoy it. And if you don’t know who Warrior One are? Try this…

“Warrior One are 2 people. One of them is called 4. Both are 29. One lives East London. One lives West. One is from Dublin. One of them isn’t. One is the producer. One is the reducer. Warrior One is a master yoga pose dedicated to Virabhadra, the name of a fierce warrior incarnation of Shiva, who had a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet, and wields a thousand clubs whilst wearing a tiger’s skin. Deadly.” – myspace

I bet you’re still in the dark but honestly what does it matter when the duo produce remixes like this?:

Eumig and Chinon supplies a welcome injection of pop

Eumig and Chinon are the latest in series of groups determined to push the sampledelic Benihana work of Daft Punk to another dimension. The accelerated pace of the backbeat of the song cannot wipe out its oozing grooves. Even as jagged as the rhythms might appear, the sudden smoothness of the vocal-sample curves is enough to make it stand out from the rest of the pack. Repeated listens may or may not reveal some sense of organization. Clearly, the duo have learned how to control the ebb and flow of the dancefloor and exploit this skill by continuing to add and subtract different variations of riffs.

While these Danish Underground Music Award winners appear to be another in the series of Justice-like French disco acts, they bring more funk to their tracks and allow them to mystify like classic Underworld. How does this differ from the common multitrack-recording that any artist could easily mix in/out or mute remains to be deciphered. Perhaps that is what makes this track the equivalent of a danceable Rubik’s Cube.

From its muted beginning, the song explodes into its infectious riff carrying with it an insistent backbeat reminiscent of the Michael’s vocal tics on the Jacksons’ “Heartbreak Hotel.” However, then at the precise moment where you think you have it pegged, Eumig and Chinon subtly introduces guitar-ish strums and a funky bass line before taking it right back to the drum break again. On paper, this might seem repetitive and tiring; to your ears, it acts like the bridge of a classic pop song – completely renewing your interest in the main riff.

The XX – Summer Love

Last week I tried talking to some friends about missing the laid back summer feel the XX brought us last year… To my surprise quite a few people were in the dark about their prior stuff. Crazy, I know! So while these goodies are old, they represent me righting a wrong for some friends.

The XX are awesome and contain a great summer vibe and cottage feel. Here are many that I would call their ‘notables’. But being a big fan, I would love to know what you all think and possibly let us in on the tracks that are your favs- some may not even be on this list. I’m just about to clean out our email so hopefully within a couple days if not sooner I will have some more brand new stuff for all of you. Until then soothe yourself with some of these.

Android Automatic – The Blue Attack [Green Remix]

From Detroit, Michigan hails Android Automatic. A solo Indie-Electro artist with influences from Radiohead to Kraftwerk and a dash of experimental mixed in. He can be heard on MTV’s “Styl’d” and has made small contributions to other media projects. Android Automatic loves to wind jam and you should too.

The Blue Attack is a light disco instrumental great for easing yourself into the day.

Goodie from a Rookie

Hey Everyone, I’m a long time 317electro, err, I mean Aerial Noise visitor, but a virgin blog poster so I’m popping my digital cherry getting this audible chocolate on the internet. This track comes from Pretty Lights, not yet well-known outside of the USA, but well worth a listen.

If you listen to music while you snowboard this track will stop your balls from constricting back inside your stomach as you ride towards that massive booter ahead.

Pretty Lights uses a monome to break down beats from big artists then mash them up with their own lyrics to produce a banger called Sunday School, check out the track right here:

Pretty Lights – Sunday School

P.S. I’m serious, it sucks that snowboarding ended before I heard this song

Le Matos [Remixes]

In a little over a week, Le Matos will be getting down at next weekend’s Neon & High Food Festival in Montreal- a 3 day epic adventure of sun, dancing, and maybe the occasional recreational drug. If you haven’t experienced Montreal before now is a good time to start. The festival is a solid way to kick off the summer shows so if you’re ANYWHERE near the city I highly recommend it. Check out the lineup for Saturday and Sunday… pretty damn good.

Le Matos are one of my favourite DJ/producing tandems from Montreal. The guys always put out great stuff. Here are a few of the notables that have come to me over the years, but the fun doesn’t stop there. Click here for more freebies.

Gorillaz – Empire Ants [Corporate Edit]

One of my favourite tracks to come off third album from the Gorillaz (which very well could be their last studio album as the crew take years to develop their stuff) is Empire Ants featuring Little Dragon. The track is great in itself but Corporate changed it up a bit with a fantastic space-odyssey-like edit. I won’t get into the band details too much as we all know the Gorillaz are. The crew have talent. Demon Days is still fresh in my mind, which is pretty crazy considering it was released May 2005. The new album has some sick beats to get down too just like the last. Check out the Alex Metric remix to their first single Stylo here.

The Gorillaz are stretching out across the UK this month. While I’m nowhere near there you may be able to stumble into a great show. Check out the dates here. Enjoy.

Tokyo-based Corporate (from Blam City Records) does something special with this edit.

Round Up #4: GRUM, Russ Chimes, Cassette Club, Thin White Duke, Nightriders, Fred Falke, Johnatron

Happy St. Patty’s Eve!

Hey everyone, sorry about the lack of music the past couple days… I honestly meant to toss this up yesterday so my bad. However in doing so I sat on these tracks a little bit longer and can tell you quality is about to follow. Now lets get to it…

To start things off right we have another remix from the King Midas of remixes- GRUM. Everything he touches turns to gold. No joke.. have a little gander at the past here. The newest has been classified as ‘unbelievable’ and has a dirty bass line that will no doubt reinvigorate the dance scene wherever it is played.

TV Rock feat Rudy – In The Air (GRUM Remix)

Russ Chimes needs little introduction. If you don’t know much about him by now I’m sure you’ll take one listen and want to click here for more.

The Vanish – Hold On (Russ Chimes Remix)

Cassette Culture indulge us with a delicious synth-licious remix to Passion Pit’s hit Sleepyhead. Real chill but vibrant all at the same time… can’t go wrong at all.

Passion Pit – Sleepyhead (Cassette Club Remix)

YES! Seal! Who needs to be kissed by a rose when you can have a Thin White Duke mix that combines a space-odyssey style of disco-electro beats with Seal’s legendary vocals?

Seal – Amazing (Thin White Duke’s Main Mix)

A dance anthem like no other, the Nightriders remix to Teen Scream Machine can only be played on one volume level and that is LOUD. You can’t just listen to this track you need to feel it- deep in your bones. Turn it up, have a listen, and then tell me what you think!

Don Diablo – Teen Scream Machine (Nightriders Remix)

Real catchy but about a week old, Falke’s new mix to Florrie’s 911 harnesses that real mainstream vibe that I think many people are looking for when transitioning from pop to disco-electro. Stellar stuff.

Mix Chopin [Ecliptic+Levitate]

Mick Match (DJ, Producer, Composer, Entertainer Extraordinaire) is Mix Chopin, a side project to Mix Match aka mXm. With a fresh face, Mix Chopin is set on reinvigorating the funk-electro scene. Ecliptic was the first to hit me with tons of great samples poking through, and then I heard Levitate… This is an exclusive off the upcoming EP to be released shortly. It packs in so much flavour its hard to get a taste of it the first time around.

The new EP is sure to be hot so stay tuned to Mix Chopin’s myspace for a release date.

Round Up #3: Fabian, Rockets, Kisses, Error :: Love / SayCet

Back with another quick installment of some great tracks…

Fabian’s new mix to Oh Shit! & Night Drugs’ Everybody Needs has become my new favourite track over the past week. It’s scrumptiously filled with delightful disco beats and rockin’ verses that will have you moving. Then of course you have Fabian who puts it all together and makes you happy you are still on the dance floor at 1:18. Altogether now…

Oh Shit! & Night Drugs – Everybody Needs (Fabian Remix)

This new Rockets remix fell just short of Fabian’s but I mean those rifts are hard to compete against. The Rockets have hit us before (see MAU remixes) so if you’ve been paying attention to them you would know by now that they have what it takes to compete with the big names out there. This new remix is further proof. Keep an eye on these guys throughout 2010! Big things are on the horizon.

Butterfly Bones – Crystal Caves (Rockets Remix)

Studying has been nearly impossible with the fantastic weather we have been having. Sun and warm weather makes the fresh spring tracks start to come to the forefront of my playlists. One of my recent favourites to grasp this light sound is the band Kisses with Bermuda. It’s captures that cottage/waterfront/boozin’ atmosphere we all love so much up here in the North. I think it’s fantastic.

Kisses – Bermuda

The bass – vocal combo Error :: Love do to Saycet’s Opal is simply one of a kind. A splash of fresh summery vocals with a hypnotic beat makes this track catchy as hell. Its been around before but damn I love it.

SayCet – Opal (Error :: Love – Opalowsky Remix)

Alright this warm weather really is incredible… GO OUTSIDE!

Gonjasufi mesmerizes with "Sufi"

The Middle Eastern conceit has been frequently used in music to express and encapsulate how foreign a world can be. At times it has been used to turn a great track into a groundbreaker (the Ofra Haza sample on Eric B. and Rakim’s “Paid In Full”) while at other times create an otherworldly sound. San Diego recluse Gonjasufi
clearly has the latter in mind. Over the course of 19 tracks, he conjures the dark magic of Primal Scream’s XTRMNTR and the mixed motifs of Mos Def’s The Ecstatic.

Aided by producers Flying Lotus and Mainframe, Gonjasufi’s mumbled melodies and beds of music continue to shift like sands beneath your feet. One minute you are bobbing to the hip-hop nod of “Ancestors” (whose pinched sitar samples will soon be lifted by countless others), then straining to hear him duet with angelic female voices over plucked guitar and harp strings in “Sheep.” The minute you think you have figured out that the record is a potent Ninja Tune-ish hip-hop/electronic record, Gonjasufi hits you the distorted music hall/garage pop of “She Gone” which features a blistering guttural scream that leads perfectly into the psychedelic grunge of “SuzieQ.”

Beyond that “A Sufi and A Killer” has 12 more songs to go. If this sounds like an intoxicating journey, take the first step with “Ancestors.”
