Cassian [Remixes+Love]

Cassian’s lovetastic vibes keep me coming back again and again. The Australian’s mixes invade your ears and workout your dance shoes simultaneously. Below are a few of my favourites but there’s lots out there to enjoy. His last compilation album released in December 2009 has been a large success so I’m sure the people at Bang Gang 12″ are happy with how things have worked out so far.

Cassian is bouncing across Australia with random tour dates throughout much of February and March 2010. Tune in here for those; and check here for more tunes.

I should also mention the ‘Tekken’ samples in Final Round are so awesome! haha throwback city to grade five.

Cassian – Friday Night

Miami Horror – Make You Mine (Cassian Remix)

Alex Metric [Awesome]

We all knew Alex Metric was good but he has really outdone himself with these new tracks. The UK native has made a name for himself delivering in nearly everything he touches. In saying that- this new Gorillaz remix is hot.

Love Handles [They're Worth The Squeeze]

Happy Valentine’s Day…

Personally I’ve never been a big fan of the hallmark holiday. But it at least gives me a chance to show off some cool artwork I found from dryicons and share a random mix of songs for the day. So whether you like valentine’s day or not at least you’ll have something to listen too as you move from point A to point B.

Goldfrapp – Rocket (GRUM Remix)

Javi – Situation (Monsieur Adi Remix)

Priors – What You Need (Allan Walker Re-Write)

Tensnake – Congolal

MVSEVM – French Jeans (Dada Life Remix)

Ricochet Toys [Tears Don't Cry]

This is not something I would usually post across here but I was feeling a little frisky the other night and thought I would try and thread some Ricochet Toys into the party mix.  Was I ever surprised with the response, especially from ladies well versed in the art of dance.  It must be that pure rhythm that’s real easy to find and therefore easy to move too;  Or possibly its that dark vocals that makes all those p.y.t’s love it.  Regardless, it spiced up my night a bit so maybe it can do the same to yours.

The Ricochet Toys made a pact that when the then current season of Power Rangers was over they would start a band and try to destroy the earth in an altogether different way – through the medium of electro-indie-disco-funk! That was ’96, this is now.   This time around David Freddie Lee came close to his goal by producing a number of brand new dicotronic beauties available on his myspace… this beauty being one of them.

you know if we try, we could probably make this into something very special

Sean Roman [Lick+Phone Call]

The Ontario native Sean Roman released his first few tracks to the world in Lick and Phone Call not too long ago.  Both are pretty impressive for the lack of attention paid to his myspace.  Light and innovative disco sounds is what fulfills the first two tracks. Lick is by far my favourite. It contains an energy to it.  Very vibrant and groovin, yet the mood of the track keeps the overall tempo real low. I really enjoy it. The unsigned, barely noticed Roman has a lot of impressive things going for him early on.

He is currently working on a project entitled ‘white lions‘. More information on that should be released soon.  Other gems can be found on the artists myspace page.

MillionYoung [Hammock+Mien]

MillionYoung surprised me with Hammock, and then surprised me even more when I dug a little deeper.  The light indie feel in Hammock is awesome. The track has a lot of great elements perfect for chillin by the coast, and even better for those hitting hot destinations in the next couple weeks over everone’s break.  The track Mien is also worth listening too. Both have that ambient. dreamy, coastal-vibe that works so well for the Florida-native, M.D. These are a beautiful couple of tracks ahead.

Local tour dates throughout the US with a quick Canadian stop in Toronto March 14, 2010 at Wrongbar.

MillionYoung is signed to the indie label Arcade Sound Ltd.

BudNubac [I'm Going To Follow]

I absolutely love the vocals in BudNubac’s I’m Going to Follow.  It’s sultry latin-loungey rhumba at its finest.  I don’t really like the breakdown that happens 4.5 mins-in as the track begins the fade-out, but other than that it’s amazing.  I love retro lounge stuff like this.  BudNubac (aka Robin Taylor-Firth – Nightmares on Wax, Olive, Subma Chena), Rawle Bruce (Subma Chena), Sara Garvey (Nightmares on Wax), Shovell (M-People), and many others all appear to lend a helping hand to the project.  Find more wonderful music from them here.

Pictures are from the first Photo Shoot for the ‘See the Sunrise’ campaign.

Barretso [Then and Now]

Barretso is going to have a great year! The Chilean has had one of the quickest trips to fame by already producing hits that will tremble much of the ‘Best of’ lists for 2010… and it’s only mid-February. That’s scary. He hit the radar Octoberish ’09 with a bunch of remixes, some which you may or may not remember (find below). Either way, the remixing talent has always been there. That’s unquestionable. What is questionable is how long he can keep releasing amazing hits.  So far the bi-weekly average is pretty impressive.

The newest in We Won’t Stop came out the past few days so I have been a little slow to react and post it. We also haven’t featured much on him before so for the lost souls out there here’s a mini recap to catch those tracks you may have missed.

Barretso – We Won’t Stop (320 kps)

Phinz [Remixes]

Austrian Phinz slowly took over my speakers last month with two big releases in Atari Disco and Ignition.  DJ Philipp Kunz, the mastermind behind it all, also saw some playing time last year with Justin Faust.  So he’s no insignificant artist by any means and 2010 could be a big year for him.  His tracks are innovative and beyond unique, especially in Atari DiscoIgnition hit me about two weeks ago and is just making an impact on me now.

He’s also produced some pretty good remixes.  The piano take on Earthquake by Little Boots is interesting.  There’s a few more available on hype machine or on his myspace.

Pocketknife Feat Joe Worricker [Get Around To It]

This next track has a lot of great things going for it.  Pocketknife feat. Joe Worricker Get Around To It sounds similar to the vibe Antony Hegerty brings to Hercules and Love Affair’s Blind.  Both tracks are impressively unique- Get Around To It is just a little newer to me.  The powerful background beats that penetrate through at key moments throughout the track compliment it well.  Adding those unique vocals give it that powerful feel.

This is from the Arthur Russell tribute album Go Bang from Electric Minds. It has a great lineup with My Tiger My Timing, Pocketknife, Max Essa, and Yam Who? to name a few. Get it here.

As a bonus you’ll find Blind included below for those that wish to compare the vocals between each.

Ghosts of Venice [I Learned From The Best]

Disco Workout helped introduce me to the filter-house beats Ghosts of Venice create. Lee Dunn is jumping the Atlantic to head on over to the US for a couple shows before heading back to UK.  Great marketing scheme above though…

If McDonald’s had more Playplaces outfitted with music and dancers like these you could sign me up for my birthday right now.  It would almost be as good as having a Much Music Video Dance, or any kind of lame dance fad of the early nineties for that matter.

Sui Generis [Speaking Terms]

Sui Generis is a Latin expression, literally meaning of its own kind/genus or unique in characteristics. The expression is often used in analytic philosophy to indicate an idea, an entity, or a reality which cannot be included in a wider concept.

This philosophical definition is fitting for our next artist because Sui Generis, as a musician, is not a sound that can be easily described in words. He seems set on the idea to redefine a new concept of rhythm within all his tracks.  Everything seems unique, and Speaking Terms really shows this.  Despite being a repetitive instrumental at heart, SG tweaks it with just enough tempo and variation to give it it’s own little vibe.  So without trying to butcher it in words,

Here’s what Keytars & Violins had to say…

K&V: “You can tell a bit about an artist just from the label they appear on. Sui Generis has featured with Rush Hour and Soma, so you know there is going to be elements of techno and house. What you might not know until you listen is just how amazing it sounds.”

Electric Swing [Unknown Album]

Alright so a friend of mine came across what she depicted as ‘Electric Swing’.  Whatever it is, it’s fucking mint.

The problem is (and I must admit it is a pretty big problem), and that is we have no idea who is behind any of this.  These tracks are a rip off a ‘chain’ CD that somehow was passed through the reigns until it landed onto us.  Plus, it’s a burnt copy with no CD information and I don’t have an iphone with handy gadgets that tell me how the universe goes ’round, or more specifically, tell me who is behind these next few tracks.  So I digress from my rant and apologize if you want to know more! As do I.

Hopefully one of you out there reading this can take a listen and instantly tell me who this is.  I even recognize a couple samples within (or think I do), not sure if they’re originals or what and it’s killllllling me! I am amazed at your talentedness.  Talentedness… it’ll catch.

Below you will find a few samples from the album.

Parov Stelar – Catgroove’ *****

‘Mr. Scruff – Get A Move On’

‘G-Swing feat. Le Major Melon – La Voix Humaine’

De-Phazz – The Mambo Craze’

Please tell me the artist name, album name, or track titles if you know them! I would love to fill in the blanks.

Calvin Harris [You Used To Hold Me]

Calvin Harris’ new single You Used To Hold Me releases from the late album Ready for the Weekend next Tuesday, February 9th, 2010.  As a sample, Harris released the official music video, which until now, flew under my radar. The track is a pretty decent floor banger;

What we have in terms of available remixes is versions from Laidback Luke and Nero.  Check ‘em out below.  Nero’s take is pretty delicious.  Those that don’t want to wait until next Tuesday for the original may just have to take a gander over on hype machine.
